Perhaps the most famous movie to be based on & filmed in Newfoundland is “The Shipping News”, starring Kevin Spacey & Judi Dench. An Oscar deserving performance together with spectacular scenery makes this part of the movie network, which has put this unique Canadian province on the movie-making map! This self drive tour will take you to many of the locations in the province used in the “The Shipping News” and also other excellent movies including “Rare Birds”, “Orca”, “Red Door” and the popular TV mini-series “Random Passage”.

Day 1 – St. John’s

Upon arrival into St. John’s pick up your rental car and explore the oldest city in North America. St. John’s is a vibrant historical city with many attractions and the added bonus of a wide selection of restaurants from fine dining to traditional Newfoundland cuisine. St. John’s has the highest concentration of pubs per capita on the continent and a visit to the famous George Street is a must! Tonight enjoy Dinner Theatre an evening of hilarious wit, Newfoundland folklore, spirited character interaction and musical & acting talent. Overnight St. John’s.

Day 2 – St. John’s

This morning enjoy a city tour of St. John’s – this is a great orientation of St. John’s, as well as the most Easterly point in North America. You will visit the National Historic site of Cape Spear and will enjoy a beautiful view on top of Signal Hill.  Other stops include Quidi Vidi Village, Government House, the Roman Catholic Cathedral and an orientation of the shops and restaurants of downtown St. John’s.  Other sightseeing suggestions include visiting the Rooms,  Johnson’s GEO Centre, the St. John’s Botanical Gardens, the Newman Wine Vaults or maybe taking a gentle stroll along sections  of the Grand Concourse,  which comprises of  40 km  (25 miles)  of spectacular  trails and walkways  within St. John’s,  Quidi Vidi  Lake and  Rennies River.  Overnight St. John’s.

Day 3 – St. John’s

Depart St. John’s and drive along the Irish Loop to the scenic Avalon Peninsula, home to over 5500 woodland caribou. Continue on to Bay Bulls and enjoy a cruise around the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve, a protective sanctuary for kittiwakes, murres, puffins and other seabirds. Continue along the south shore to Ferryland and enjoy a lighthouse picnic in Ferryland or take time to visit the fascinating Colony of Avalon Archeological site. Return back to St. John’s. Overnight St. John’s.

Day 4 – St. John’s/Trinity

This morning you will depart St. John’s for a leisurely drive north along the scenic coastal route via the charming, historical village of Brigus, once home of the world famous explorer Captain Bob Bartlett. Visit Hawthorne Cottage, Ye Olde Stone Barn Museum and the Tunnel while in Brigus. Continue on to the area of Bonavista Bay where the movie “The Shipping News” and the widely acclaimed TV series “Random Passage” were filmed. Your accommodation will be at the delightful Fisher’s Loft Inn, a serene and secluded spot with all the creature comforts of home. Many stars have stayed at this property during the filming of “The Shipping News” including Kevin Spacey and Dame Judi Dench. Overnight Trinity.

Day 5 – Trinity

This morning take time to visit the nearby Cape Random film set constructed in 2000 which offers visitors the opportunity to step back in time and imagine the life of our forbearers in a typical fishing community in the early 1800’s. The rest of the day is free for you to explore the charming village of Trinity and the surrounding areas. Today visit the locations where filming of “The Shipping News” and “Random Passage” took place. Overnight Trinity.

Day 6 – Trinity

This morning enjoy a whale-watching cruise of Trinity Bay. Afternoon at leisure to enjoy this area of outstanding natural beauty. Trinity is the cultural capital of Newfoundland and is renown for its unique architecture including the Ryan Store, Hiscock House and the Blacksmith Museum. Other suggestions include driving to Bonavista and visiting Cape Bonavista Lighthouse, historic Ryan Premises, Mockbeggar Plantation and the Matthew Interpretation Centre to name a few! Return back to Trinity. Overnight Trinity.

Day 7 – Trinity/St. John’s

Depart Trinity and drive back to St. John’s airport where you will drop off your rental car ready for your onward flight, taking wonderful memories of this unique destination with you!
